What began in 1986 as a pioneering group of fewer than 20 affiliates has grown into a powerful national network of over 120 campus, community, and Indigenous radio stations broadcasting in over 65 languages.

Working with incredible stations like yourselves, providing a platform for marginalized voices, sharing vital local news, preserving cultural heritage, and fostering unparalleled inclusivity is what we are most proud of.

Unveiling Our Living History

To mark this major milestone, we are thrilled to unveil the permanent digital home of the non-profit radio archive: history.ncra.ca. The website will be updated over the coming weeks and we will be adding audio and written content.

A massive highlight of this initiative is the incredible work done by our Research and Development Manager, Sofia Vanegas. Sofia has put together a massive audio scrapbook and master collage project, weaving together historic broadcast snippets and “Then and Now” segments from the past forty years of Canadian community radio.

We invite you to listen to the NCRA 40th Anniversary Spotlight series, linked here. Thank you to all the members who send in their history and archival work and please keep sending your historical documents, photos, and audio clips to history@ncra.ca as we continue to honour the past. Our dedicated members, volunteers, and supporters, congratulations to all of us for hitting this milestone together.

Here’s to the next circle of the sun, to forty more years of amplifying voices, and to celebrating the enduring power of community and campus radio!

Hope everyone has a wonderful week,

The NCRA/ANREC Team,

-Eloisa Veliz

To explore the 40th Anniversary Audio Collages, please visit the 40th Anniversary Page!
