Canada’s Campus and Community Radio Heritage.

NCRA/ANREC History

The National Campus and Community Radio Association/L’Association nationale des radios étudiantes et communautaires (NCRA/ANREC) is a not-for-profit national association working to recognize, support, and encourage volunteer-based, non-profit, public-access campus, community, and Indigenous radio broadcasters in Canada. Though radio on Canadian campuses dates back to 1922, and community stations took off in the mid-1970s, the roots of NCRA/ANREC begin with the first National Campus and Community Radio Conference (NCRC), hosted by Carleton University in Ottawa, 1981. At the first few conferences, the National Campus and Community Radio Organization (NCRO) was born, and a few years later, the Organization was incorporated as the NCRA/ANREC.

Since 1986, we have been providing advice, advocacy, and community for campus and community stations, ensuring stability and support for individual stations and the sector at large. On this website, we’ve chronicled the various histories of the Canadian c/c radio sector for your perusal, with the collaboration of our member stations – enjoy!
